Whether you are in a long term relationship or have recently started dating someone, there is no doubt that the pandemic has been a major romance quencher! The initial excitement of meeting someone online can fizzle out very quickly when the personal interaction piece is missing. Even for established couples, it is very hard to keep the spark alive during lockdown. Life takes over and the days and weeks just seem to melt into one long monotonous lockdown. Like anything in life, if we want long term success we have to invest proper time and energy. No matter how long or how short you have been together, you should schedule a weekly non movable date with your significant other. Here are my top 10 lockdown date night ideas:
Whether you are together in person, or are currently dating virtually, a good old fashioned competitive games night is one of my favourite suggestions! There is an endless list of possible choices from cards, board games and charades to Guess Who or Heads Up! Many old fashioned board games are now available online making it a great virtual choice and a super ice breaker. Even if you have been married many years, a bit of competitive fun is sure to get the spark blazing!
If you are living together, or in close proximity of each other, a picnic is a great lockdown date choice. Many of you are lucky enough to live near a nice park or waterfront, so get out and make the most of it. If not, you can still find a fun spot for a picnic near your home or waste case scenario, set up camp in your back garden! Fingers crossed the weather will play its part.
Get your mind out of the gutter! What I mean is why not take up a fun physical activity together? Go for a swim, take up running, play a game of tennis, go for a cycle, play a game of darts.. the list is literally endless! If you don’t live near each other, you can still go for a walk with your camera phone and showcase the best of what your neighbourhood has to offer. Or why not join the same running app and start training together virtually.
Movie night might not seem like a great choice, especially if you have spent most lockdown evenings on the couch. But movie night needs to be different to a normal evening. Firstly, you should deck out the room in a cinema setting and stock up on some cinema type snacks. Most importantly, you need to put your phones away and be fully present together. Just remember to be careful with your movie choice. If it is a positive burst that you are looking for, then watching someone being tortured isn’t going to be the ideal selection!
Perfect the Palette
Wine, beer, gin or whiskey tasting is a great lockdown date option for both new and established relationships. It can be done both in person or virtually. You just need to decide what you are going to be tasting before hand and then stock up. It can also be combined with many of the other options on this list. Or why not spend the time getting to know each other better with games like ‘Never have I ever’ or ‘Show and Tell’. If you want some great tasting ideas check out ‘The Best Irish Craft Beer on the Market‘ or ‘Your favourite Irish Whiskey Brands revealed‘
A Labour of Love
If you are living together or near each other, why not complete a DIY project together in your home or garden. If you would like to do something for the greater good, why not join a community group or volunteer for a local charity together? In the digital age, doing some volunteer or fundraising work together could also definitely be done virtually and would be such a rewarding experience for both of you.
Cocktail making is always great fun and can be done either in person or virtually. Over the past few weeks I have featured a cocktail series with So Hotel group. Check out my website for all of the recipes and step by step videos (Classic Mojito Recipe). If you want to make it even more fun, why not add a dress code or theme to the evening!
Make a Meal of It
Cooking up a storm is not only good for the body and the mind, it is a great learning exercise. There are a number of Irish businesses offering cooking or baking packs that contain everything that you need for a particular recipe. Alternatively there are endless recipes available online. If you are doing it virtually why not make a competition of it! You can also combine this activity with many of the other suggestions on the list.
Paint & Sip
Some of the funniest hen parties that I have been on have involved activities like ‘paint and sip’. So why not transport that fun to your weekly lockdown date night. Basic art supplies can be bought online or in many large supermarkets so you should be able to get going relatively quickly. I’ll leave it up to you whether or not you want to explore the nude model route!
A Shared Experience
One of the great positives that lockdown has brought us is the time and space to learn new skills. There are now a vast list of of online courses or classes that you could take together. If you both love books or podcasts, why not set up your own weekly book club. There are literally so many opportunities just a click away.
If we were not in the current predicament, dating would without doubt feel a lot easier. But ask yourself, if there was no lockdown what would your date night consist of? A trip to the cinema, a nice meal, a drink in the local pub? Lockdown has forced us to be a lot more creative and with it has brought many great opportunities to truly get to know each other or rekindle that romantic spark. So let’s not look back and say that we wasted this time sitting waiting for the storm to be over. Let’s embrace the circumstances as they are right now.
Have you any other great date night ideas that you would like to share? Have you had success with any of these ideas or have some funny experiences? We are all in this together so I would really love to hear from you.
